Skënduli House: A Window into Ottoman Gjirokastra

Skënduli House stands as a testament to Gjirokastra's rich cultural heritage, offering an enchanting glimpse into the opulence of an Ottoman home. Built in the 1700s and partially restored in 1827, this architectural gem showcases the intricate craftsmanship of the period. The Skënduli family, prominent merchants, constructed the mansion to reflect their status and influence.The house boasts unique features, including 64 windows, 44 doors, 12 rooms, and multiple fireplaces, reflecting the family's wealth. Inside, visitors can admire the detailed woodwork, decorative ceilings, and traditional furnishings. The main guest room is particularly notable for its decorated ceiling and wooden poles. The house also features both an internal and external staircase, a unique architectural element.During the communist era, the house was used as the Ethnographic Museum. After the fall of communism, it was returned to the Skënduli family, who opened it to visitors. Today, a family member, often Nasip Skënduli, a descendant of the original owners, welcomes guests and shares stories about the house and its history.
