Tyrbja e Kapllan Pashës: A Silent Sentinel of Tirana's Past

Located in the center of Tirana, the Tyrbja e Kapllan Pashës is a cultural monument of the first category, declared by the Albanian government in 1948. The tomb was built in the early 19th century to honor Kapllan Pasha, who governed Tirana. Originally, it was part of a larger cemetery complex associated with Tirana's first mosque, the Sylejman Pasha Mosque, but the mosque was destroyed during World War II. Of the six monumental tombs that once stood in the complex, Kapllan Pasha's is the sole survivor.The tomb features a distinctive octagonal shape with eight carved stone columns resting on stone bases and topped with plant motif capitals. These columns support arches, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. Although Kapllan Pasha was initially buried here, his remains were later moved to Istanbul, Turkey. The tomb has undergone restoration over the years, most recently by the Municipality of Tirana in 1985.Today, Tyrbja e Kapllan Pashës stands in contrast to the modern buildings surrounding it, serving as a reminder of Tirana's layered history. It is a peaceful spot where one can contemplate the city's evolution from an Ottoman outpost to a modern European capital.
