Overview

Petrelë Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Petrelës, stands proudly in the village of Petrelë, a short distance south of Tirana. This historical castle dates back to Late Antiquity, with foundations believed to have been laid in the 3rd to 4th centuries. Rebuilt in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it formed a key part of the Byzantine Empire's defense network in the region. The castle's strategic location, approximately 329 meters (1,079 ft) above sea level, provided extensive views of the surrounding hills and plains, enabling communication with other important castles such as Krujë and Durrës via signal fires. Its triangular shape and two observation towers are characteristic of its 15th-century design, although its history stretches back much further.Petrelë Castle played a significant role in Albanian history, particularly during the 15th century when Karl Muzaka Thopia, then lord of Petrelë, married Mamica Kastrioti, the sister of Albania's national hero, Skanderbeg. Mamica Kastrioti later commanded the castle during Skanderbeg's battles against the Ottoman forces. The castle was not only a strategic military point but also a place of rest and recuperation for Skanderbeg himself.Today, Petrelë Castle welcomes visitors with a blend of history and hospitality. A restaurant located within the castle's walls offers a unique dining experience with breathtaking views of the Erzen valley, olive groves, and surrounding mountains. The castle is easily accessible from Tirana, making it a popular day trip destination for those seeking to immerse themselves in Albania's rich heritage and enjoy its stunning landscapes.
