Discover more about Et'hem Bej Mosque

The Et'hem Bey Mosque, or Xhamia e Et'hem Beut, is a captivating historical site in the center of Tirana, Albania. Construction began in the late 18th century (either 1791 or 1794) by Molla Bey and was completed in 1819 or 1821 by his son, Haxhi Ethem Bey. The mosque's architecture features a prayer hall, a portico surrounding the north side, and a minaret. The mosque is particularly noted for its frescoes, which depict trees, waterfalls, and bridges – motifs rarely found in Islamic art. These paintings set it apart, blending Islamic, Ottoman, and Albanian design elements. The mosque's portico showcases numerous landscapes, and the interior displays scenes including the Süleymaniye Mosque. During Albania's communist era, when religious practices were suppressed, the Et'hem Bey Mosque was closed but not destroyed. It was declared a historical monument and underwent restoration. In January 1991, a significant event occurred when 10,000 people, defying the communist authorities, gathered at the mosque carrying flags, marking a turning point for religious freedom in Albania. Today, the Et'hem Bey Mosque stands as a testament to Albania's religious freedom and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the mosque and take daily tours, except during prayer services. Modest dress and removal of shoes are required before entering.
