Kalaja e Elbasanit: A Journey Through Time

Kalaja e Elbasanit, or Elbasan Castle, is a historical monument located in the heart of Elbasan, Albania. Originally built in the 4th century as a Roman castrum during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, it served as a crucial defensive structure along the Via Egnatia.Over the centuries, the castle has seen numerous transformations. It was rebuilt in the 6th century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I after being damaged in barbarian invasions. In the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire, under Sultan Mehmed II, restored and expanded the castle, adding 26 equidistant towers and solidifying its role as a military garrison. The castle's strategic importance is evident in its architecture, blending Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman influences.Today, visitors can explore the castle grounds, walk along the ramparts, and discover historical remnants, including Sinan Pasha's Turkish bath, a well-preserved structure from the early 19th century.
