History of Elbasan Region

Elbasan's history dates back to the Roman era when it was known as Scampa. Founded in the 1st century AD, Scampa was strategically located along the Via Egnatia, an important Roman road that connected the Adriatic Sea to Byzantium (modern-day Istanbul). This made Scampa a crucial military and trade hub during the Roman Empire.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, the town of Scampa transitioned into the Byzantine Empire.
