    Discover more about Skanderbeg Square

Skanderbeg Square, or Sheshi Skënderbej, is the main plaza in the heart of Tirana, Albania. Named after the Albanian national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, the square serves as a significant cultural and historical landmark. Skanderbeg, a 15th-century figure, led the Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire, making the square a symbol of national pride and independence. The square's history dates back to 1917 when the Austrians constructed a public space in this location. After Tirana became the capital in 1920, the square underwent several transformations. During the Albanian monarchy (1928-1939), it featured a roundabout with a fountain. The square was redesigned in the neo-Renaissance style during the Italian occupation in 1939. During the communist era, a statue of Joseph Stalin was erected, later replaced by the Skanderbeg Monument. The statue of Enver Hoxha was also erected but removed in 1991 after the fall of communism. In June 2017, Skanderbeg Square was renovated into a large pedestrian zone, now considered the biggest in the Balkans. The redesign includes stone paving from all over Albania, symbolizing national unity. The square is surrounded by important buildings such as the National History Museum, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower, and the Palace of Culture. Skanderbeg Square is a venue for cultural festivals, concerts, and public gatherings.
