Elbasan Castle: A Journey Through Time

Elbasan Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Elbasanit, is a historical landmark in the city of Elbasan, Albania. This 15th-century fortress was constructed by the Ottoman Empire in 1466, under the order of Sultan Mehmet II, on the foundations of a Roman castrum dating back to the 4th century AD. Originally named Mansio Scampis, the Roman fortification was strategically positioned along the Via Egnatia, an important trade route connecting the Adriatic coast to Byzantium.The castle's history spans multiple periods of settlement, from the Roman and Byzantine eras to the Ottoman and modern times. The original Roman fortification featured 3-meter thick walls in a rectangular shape. In 1466, the castle was rebuilt by the Ottomans, who utilized the pre-existing fortifications and added 26 equidistant, 9-meter high towers. Within the castle walls, visitors can explore a variety of historical and cultural monuments, including Sinan Pasha's Turkish bath, the Orthodox Church of St. Mary's Assumption, the King's Mosque, and the Clock Tower.Today, the area within the castle walls is known as the Castle Neighborhood, where the past and present coexist. The castle stands as a testament to the diverse architectural styles and historical narratives that have shaped Elbasan over the centuries. Visitors can walk along the ramparts, explore the interior, and enjoy panoramic views of the city. The castle is open to the public and entry is free.
