Perched on a rocky hill 130 meters above sea level, overlooking the city of Shkodër, Rozafa Castle is a testament to Albania's rich history and enduring legends. The castle's strategic location, at the meeting point of the Buna and Drin rivers, has made it a coveted site throughout history.Originally built by the Illyrians in the 9th century BCE, the castle has been controlled by Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans, each leaving their mark on its architecture and fortifications. The Venetians significantly rebuilt the castle, and most of the visible structures today are of Venetian origin. The castle comprises three courtyards, divided by interior walls, and offers stunning views of Shkodra Lake, the river confluence, and the city.The legend of Rozafa, a woman who was walled into the castle to prevent its collapse, is central to the castle's identity. According to the tale, Rozafa agreed to be immured on the condition that she could continue to care for her infant son, symbolizing sacrifice and maternal strength. A sculpture near the entrance commemorates this legend.Inside the castle, visitors can explore the ruins of various structures, including the Church of St. Stephen, which was transformed into the Mosque of Sultan Fatih during Ottoman rule. The Castle of Shkodra Museum, located within the former Venetian ruler's residence, showcases the castle's 4000-year history with artifacts and exhibits.
