    Discover more about Tirana Castle

Tirana Castle, or the Fortress of Justinian, is a significant historical site located in the center of Tirana. Its history stretches back to the Byzantine era, with some believing it was constructed or reconstructed during the reign of Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD. The castle's location was strategic, as it stood at the crossroads of the main east-west and north-south roads, forming the nucleus of Tirana.Over the centuries, the castle underwent several transformations. During the Ottoman period in the late 18th century, Ahmet Pasha Bargjini constructed a new castle on the ruins of the old one. In 1798, the Toptani family from Kruja took possession of the castle, leading to a long-standing feud between the families. In 1832, the castle was demolished by order of the Ottoman Grand Vizier Reşid Mehmed Pasha.Today, only remnants of the castle survive, including a 6-meter-high Ottoman-era wall. The uncovered wall foundations have been integrated into Murat Toptani Street, a pedestrian area with cafes and shops. The castle area has been revitalized and now features a traditional bazaar with handicrafts stores and restaurants serving traditional cuisine. Tirana Castle was declared a Monument of Culture of the first category in 1973, and the new tracks of walls were declared a cultural monument in 2008.
