Discover more about Castle of Kruja

Kruja Castle, or Kalaja e Krujës, is more than just a historical site; it's a living testament to Albanian history, courage, and cultural heritage. Nestled on a hilltop in the city of Krujë, about 20 miles north of Tirana, the castle offers a captivating journey through centuries of struggle, triumph, and cultural richness. The castle's origins trace back to the 5th or 6th century, with archaeological evidence suggesting human habitation dating back to the 3rd century AD. Kruja became the capital of Albania in the 13th century. However, its most famous period is associated with Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, who led a 25-year rebellion against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Skanderbeg, initially educated as an Ottoman hostage, defected and seized Kruja Castle, making it the epicenter of his resistance. The fortress withstood three major Ottoman sieges in 1450, 1466, and 1467, a testament to its strategic location and Skanderbeg's military prowess. Ottoman forces who conquered large areas like Constantinople and the Balkans could not break the castle's defenses. Today, visitors can explore the castle grounds, which are generally free to enter, and enjoy panoramic views of Kruja town and the Albanian countryside. Inside the castle walls, you'll find several museums and other points of interest, including the Skanderbeg Museum, which showcases artifacts and exhibits detailing his life and the battles fought to protect Albanian independence. The Ethnographic Museum, housed in a traditional family home from 1764, provides insights into traditional Albanian life and culture. Other structures within the castle complex include the remains of the Sultan Mehmed Fatih mosque and the remnants of the Dollma Tekke, reflecting the diverse influences that shaped Albania's history. The castle is depicted on the reverse of the 5000 lekë banknote, a testament to its enduring significance.
