Preza Fortress: A Window to Albania's Past

Preza Fortress, or Kalaja e Prezës in Albanian, is a captivating historical site located in the village of Prezë, a short distance from Tirana's international airport. This medieval castle, strategically positioned on a hilltop, offers visitors a glimpse into Albania's past and stunning views of the surrounding landscape.The fortress's history dates back to the 6th century when it was initially built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Its purpose was to protect the area and control the important road from Durrës to Kruja. The castle was later expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries by the Thopia family, a local Albanian feudal family. During the 15th century, it became a key stronghold in the Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire, led by Skanderbeg.The fortress itself is characterized by its irregular pentagonal shape and four towers, one at each corner. A clock tower, added in the 19th century, stands atop one of the original towers. Within the castle grounds, visitors can explore the historic walls, climb the towers for panoramic views, and imagine life within its walls centuries ago. A restaurant located within the castle offers a place to relax and enjoy the scenery.
