Lezhë Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Lezhës, sits on a hill approximately 180 meters above sea level, offering stunning views of Lezhë, the Drin River, and the Adriatic coast. The castle's origins trace back to an ancient Illyrian acropolis from the 4th-3rd century BC. The Byzantines constructed a castle on these ruins in the 8th-9th century. Throughout the centuries, the castle has been under the control of various powers, including local aristocratic families, the Venetians, and the Ottomans. In 1444, Lezhë Castle was the location where Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, formed the League of Lezhë to resist Ottoman expansion. The castle was eventually captured by the Ottomans in 1478 and reconstructed in 1521 under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. An earthquake in 1729 caused significant damage, leading to its gradual abandonment. Today, the castle ruins showcase a blend of architectural styles, reflecting its diverse history. Visitors can explore the remnants of Ottoman buildings, a mosque, a Roman arch, and an Illyrian tower. Visiting Lezhë Castle provides a unique opportunity to connect with Albania's cultural heritage.
