Discover more about The English man's Clocktower

The English Man's Clocktower, known locally as Sahati i Inglizit, stands as a testament to Shkodër's diverse cultural influences. Constructed in the late 19th century with funds from Lord Alfred Paget, an English nobleman, the tower is more than just a timepiece; it represents a fascinating chapter in the city's history. Lord Paget, who arrived in Shkodër in the late 1800s, intended the building to serve a dual purpose: as his residence and as a center for spreading Protestantism in Albania. He designed a large hall in oriental style, adapting it into a chapel-like shrine, with the clock tower intended to function as a bell tower for religious services. However, his efforts to establish an Anglican church faced strong opposition, and the building primarily remained a residence. The tower's architecture is unique, resembling a medieval aristocratic castle or château, making it a standout structure in Shkodër. Over the years, the clock became a prominent feature of daily life in Shkodër, though it often suffered from poor maintenance. During the communist regime, the building was nationalized and transformed into the Historical Museum of Shkodër. The clocks were removed and transferred to the Fortress of Gjirokastër. In 1990, after the end of communism, the tower and residence were returned to their original owners. The tower was restored in 2024. Today, the English Man's Clocktower remains a significant cultural monument, drawing visitors with its intriguing history and unique architectural style.
