Discover more about Sahati i Inglizit

The Sahati i Inglizit (English Clock Tower) stands as a testament to Shkodër's layered history and diverse cultural influences. Constructed in the late 19th century, the tower was financed by Lord Alfred Paget, an English nobleman who sought to promote Protestantism in the region. The tower is the only building in Shkodër that resembles a medieval-style castle or château. Originally, the building was designed as an oriental-style hall with a carved ceiling, intended to serve as a chapel inspired by Protestant churches. The clock tower itself would function as a bell tower for religious services. However, due to opposition from the local Catholic clergy, the building remained primarily a residence. The tower's architecture is notable for its unique octagonal layout, standing at 16.35 meters tall with walls made of stonemasonry. In 1949, during the communist regime, the building was repurposed as the People's Museum, with the clocks being removed and transferred to Gjirokastër. After 1990, the tower and residence were returned to their original owners. The tower was restored in 2024 and is now a cultural monument. Today, the Sahati i Inglizit is surrounded by lively squares and cafes, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in local culture and savor traditional Albanian cuisine. Climbing to the top of the tower provides panoramic views of Shkodër and the surrounding landscapes, especially breathtaking at sunset. Nearby attractions include the Rozafa Castle and the vibrant bazaar.
