Named after the national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, who led the resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, the square stands as a testament to Albania's rich history and cultural identity. The square has been the site of various political rallies, demonstrations, and celebrations throughout its history.Originally established in the 17th century, Skanderbeg Square has undergone several transformations. In 1917, the Austrians constructed a public square in this location. During the Albanian monarchy (1928-1939), it featured a roundabout with a fountain. During the communist years, a statue of Joseph Stalin was erected, later replaced by a statue of Enver Hoxha, which was removed in 1991.The square was renovated in June 2017, transforming it into a pedestrian-friendly zone and earning the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2018.
