Petrelë Castle, or Kalaja e Petrelës, is a captivating historical site located in central Albania, a short distance from Tirana. The castle's origins trace back to the 6th century AD, during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, though the structure seen today largely dates from the 15th century. Strategically positioned 329 meters (1,079 ft) above sea level, it was part of the signaling and defense network of Krujë Castle; fires were used to communicate between the castles.The castle has a triangular shape with two observation towers. Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy stunning views of the Erzen valley, rolling hills, olive groves, and surrounding mountains. During Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottomans, the castle was commanded by Mamica Kastrioti, Skanderbeg's sister, adding to its historical significance. Legend says that a beautiful girl named Elena lived in the castle and was in love with a soldier named Gjergj. Their love was forbidden, and one day, Elena disappeared and was never seen again. It is said that she is still waiting for her beloved Gjergjo to return.Today, a restaurant located within the castle offers traditional Albanian cuisine, providing a unique dining experience with a historical backdrop.
