Discover more about Peace Bell

The Peace Bell, situated near the iconic Pyramid of Tirana, is a powerful symbol of Albania's journey from a turbulent past towards a future of peace. The Pyramid, once a museum glorifying the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha, now stands empty, providing a stark contrast to the bell's message of hope and resilience. Crafted from 20,000 spent gun cartridges, the Peace Bell is a testament to the devastating 1997-2000 crisis in Albania. This period of civil unrest was triggered by the collapse of pyramid schemes, which led to widespread violence and the loss of hundreds of lives. In a remarkable act of healing, children from the northern region of Albania collected the cartridges that were then used to create this monument. The Peace Bell serves multiple purposes: it stands as a memorial to those who died during the civil unrest and under the dictatorship, it critiques the violence that engulfed Albania, and it shines as a beacon of hope for a peaceful future. Visitors are invited to ring the bell, an act that symbolizes a collective desire for peace. The sound of the bell, often accompanied by the gathering of young people, pays homage to the lives lost and underscores the importance of peace and reconciliation.
