Good Cave (Shpella e Mirë): A Mystical Retreat Near Tirana

Good Cave (Shpella e Mirë besh), also known as Saint George's Cave, is a captivating natural and spiritual site located in the village of Besh-Livadh, near Tirana. Situated on Brrar Mountain, the cave is known for its impressive geological formations and its significance as a place of pagan rituals and local traditions. Inside the cave, visitors can marvel at the diverse shapes and sizes of stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years. The cave stretches over 150 meters in depth, with heights varying from 2 to 10 meters, creating a fascinating underground landscape. Several species of bats also inhabit the cave. According to local legends, the cave was once deeper but has been reduced in size due to damage. The cave is called “good” because the water dripping inside is believed to have healing and magical properties. Visitors often collect this water in containers at the cave's entrance, using it for healing and spiritual cleansing. On Saint George's Day (June 6), locals celebrate by spending the night in the cave, making sacrifices, and cooking food. The cave is a unique place where different faiths and traditions blend together.
