Getting There

Walking

From the center of Lezhë, the castle is accessible on foot, though the walk is uphill. Start from the city center and follow Rruga Nënë Tereza, which will lead you towards the base of the hill where the castle is located. The path then ascends, becoming steeper as you approach the castle entrance. The walk from the town center is strenuous and takes at least thirty minutes. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
Public Transport

You can take a local bus from the main bus station in Lezhë. Look for buses that head towards the castle or ask locals for guidance if you're unsure. Get off at the stop nearest to Rruga Varosh. From there, follow Rruga Varosh for a short distance until you see the entrance to Lezhë Castle. The bus ride will take around 10-15 minutes, plus a short walk. A one-way ticket costs approximately 30 Lek (€0.30).

Lezhë Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Lezhës, dominates the city of Lezhë in northern Albania. Situated on a hill approximately 186 meters (610 ft) high, the castle's strategic location offers panoramic views of the Lezhë fields, the Adriatic Sea, and the Drin River.The castle's history dates back to the 4th-3rd century B.C. when it was an acropolis of the ancient Illyrian city of Lissos. Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt and modified by various powers, including the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans, each leaving their mark on its architecture. In 1444, Lezhë Castle was the site where Skanderbeg, the national hero of Albania, united Albanian princes in the League of Lezhë to resist Ottoman expansion.Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the castle, which include Ottoman buildings, a mosque, a tower with a Roman arch, and an Illyrian tower. The castle provides a glimpse into Albania's rich and turbulent past, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the country's cultural identity.
