Discover more about Preza Castle

Preza Castle, a captivating historical landmark in Albania, stands as a testament to the country's rich and turbulent past. Located in the village of Preza, northwest of Tirana, the castle occupies a strategic hilltop position between the plains of Tirana and Durrës. This location allowed it to control the important road from Durrës to Kruja. Originally built during the Byzantine era in the 550s by Justinian the Great, the castle was expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries by the Thopia family, a local Albanian feudal family. During the 15th century, it became a stronghold for Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire led by Skanderbeg. Today, the castle is a recognized 'monument of culture'. The castle's pentagonal shape features intact walls and towers, including a clock tower erected in the 1800s. From the battlements, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including Tirana and the Adriatic Sea. Inside the castle, a restaurant offers traditional Albanian cuisine.
