Shkembi i Vajes, also known as Gryka e Vajës (the Gorge of Weeping), is more than just a scenic overlook; it's a place etched in Albanian collective memory. Located north of Krujë, this site marks a heart-wrenching episode from Albania's history of resistance against Ottoman invasion. In June 1478, as Ottoman forces besieged Krujë, ninety young women chose death over capture. According to local legend, they jumped off this cliff, now known as the Rock of the Girls, to preserve their freedom and honor. The tragedy has been commemorated for centuries by the people of Krujë. Mothers would come to the site to mourn the loss of the young women. The name 'Shkembi i Vajes' (Rock of Weeping) is derived from this annual lament. A memorial plaque now stands at the site. The stream below the cliff is called Përroi i Vajës, which translates to the Stream of Weeping. Shkembi i Vajes is located on the northern part of Kruja Mountain. The road Krujë-Qafë Shtamë passes along the left side of the mountain. The gorge was formed by the erosion of the Droja river on limestone rocks. The gorge is approximately 1 km long and 50 m wide. The slopes of the gorge are up to 200 m high.
