Its strategic location, overlooking the meeting point of the Buna and Drin rivers and near Lake Shkodra, has made it a coveted stronghold for millennia. Originally an Illyrian settlement, the castle's history stretches back to the 4th-3rd century BCE. It was later captured by the Romans in 167 BC and subsequently passed through Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman hands, each leaving their mark on its architecture. The Venetians significantly rebuilt the castle, and their influence is prominent in the remaining walls.The castle is renowned for the legend of Rozafa, a tale of sacrifice where a woman was walled into the fortress to prevent its collapse. The legend says Rozafa agreed to the sacrifice on the condition that parts of her body remained exposed to care for her infant son. A sculpture near the entrance immortalizes this poignant story.Inside the castle, visitors can explore three courtyards, each showcasing ruins from different eras. Highlights include the remains of the Church of St. Stephen, later transformed into the Mosque of Sultan Fatih, and a museum within the former Venetian governor's residence detailing the castle's history.
