Kalaja e Lëkurësit: Sentinel of Sarandë

Perched on a strategic hill, Kalaja e Lëkurësit offers visitors a captivating blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding countryside. Built in 1537 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the castle was designed to defend against Venetian threats and control the harbor of Sarandë. The castle housed a garrison of 220 soldiers and played a crucial role in safeguarding the harbor and the Saranda-Butrint road.The castle's square shape features two round towers at opposite corners. Although it has suffered the ravages of time, the remnants of its walls and structures still exude a sense of grandeur and resilience. The best-preserved parts of the castle are its southern and eastern sides. Restorations have revealed the remains of a small, post-Byzantine church with murals dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries.Today, visitors can explore the castle's interior, wander through its ancient stone walls, and enjoy panoramic views. The elevated position offers sweeping views of Sarandë, the shimmering bay, and the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. On a clear day, the distant silhouette of Corfu can be seen on the horizon.
