The Cold War Tunnel: A Journey into Albania's Communist Past

Explore Gjirokastra's Cold War Tunnel: An underground journey into Albania's communist past and a glimpse into a secret bunker.

4.3

The Cold War Tunnel in Gjirokastra offers a unique glimpse into Albania's communist past. Built in secrecy during the 1970s, this 800-meter-long underground bunker was designed as an emergency shelter for local communist officials in the event of a foreign invasion or nuclear attack. The tunnel, also known as the Cold War Museum, reflects the paranoia of Albania's communist dictator, Enver Hoxha, who feared foreign invasion after Albania's split with the Soviet Union in the early 1960s. The bunker features 59 rooms, including government offices, interrogation rooms, sleeping quarters, a kitchen, power generation facilities, and even a decontamination chamber. Although much of the original furniture was looted in 1990, remnants remain, providing an authentic and atmospheric experience. A 20-minute guided tour takes visitors through the labyrinthine corridors, offering a glimpse into the preparations made by the regime for a potential nuclear attack. Highlights include the de-contamination room and the generator room, which houses a rusting generator made in Czechoslovakia. The tunnel's main entrance is near the Municipality building on Çerçiz Topulli Square.
