Discover more about Kisha Katolike Françeskane

Located in the city of Shkodër, the Kisha Katolike Françeskane is a significant cultural and spiritual landmark. The church's architecture features intricate details, reflecting a mix of local and religious artistry. Inside, visitors are greeted by a serene atmosphere that encourages reflection. The interior is adorned with religious artwork and stained-glass windows, creating a captivating experience. The Franciscan order has a long history in Shkodër, dating back to 1288. However, after the Ottomans took over Shkodër in 1479, the original church and convent were destroyed, and the friars could not return for nearly 400 years. Construction on the current church began in 1875 by Father Tomë Markoci, with the grounds being dedicated in 1878. In 1902, the Franciscan mission received permission from the Sultan to build a church in Shkodër. Friars Françesk Melkiori and Lorenc Mitroviqi collected alms for the construction. The designs, initially by Friar Anselm and enhanced by French engineer Agustin Briott, led to the church's completion in 1905. In January 1947, the Albanian Secret Police (Sigurimi) stored arms and ammunition in the church. When the Franciscan priests discovered this, they were arrested. Restoration work was done on the church tower and rear wing in 2007. Today, the Kisha Katolike Françeskane remains a vital part of Shkodër, hosting community events and religious ceremonies.
