Getting there

Walking

If you are in the town center of Lezhë, you can walk to Lezhë Castle. Start from the main square and head north on Rruga Skënderbeu. Turn left onto Rruga Varosh and follow it; the castle will be on your right. The walk takes about 20-30 minutes and involves some inclines, so wear comfortable shoes.

Public Transport

From the main bus station in Lezhë, take a local bus heading towards the castle. Ask locals for guidance if you're unsure which bus to take. Get off at the stop nearest to Rruga Varosh, then follow Rruga Varosh until you see the entrance to Lezhë Castle. The bus ride takes about 10-15 minutes, plus a short walk. A bus ride within the city is around €0.50 to €1.

Car

If driving from the Razma Region, head south towards the SH1 road. Continue on SH1 towards Lezhë and follow signs to Lezhë Castle. The castle is located at QMM2+F2X, Rruga Varosh, Lezhë 4501, Albania. Parking is available near the castle entrance. Be mindful of parking regulations in the area.

Overview

Lezhë Castle, or Kalaja e Lezhës, stands proudly on a hill approximately 180 meters above the city of Lezhë, offering stunning views of the Drin River, the Lezhë plain, and the Adriatic coast. Originally the site of the acropolis of the ancient Illyrian city of Lissos in the 4th-3rd century BC, the castle has been rebuilt and modified throughout history by various powers, including the Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans.The castle's strategic importance is evident in its history. It was a key location during the League of Lezhë in 1444, where Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, united Albanian princes against the Ottoman Empire. The castle features a blend of architectural styles, with remnants of Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman structures visible throughout the site. Visitors can explore fortified walls, towers with lookout windows, a mosque, cisterns, and the remains of other buildings within the castle grounds.While the castle was damaged by an earthquake in 1729 and gradually abandoned, its ruins still stand as a testament to Albania's rich and turbulent past. Today, Lezhë Castle is a cultural monument and a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and appreciate the historical significance and natural beauty of the region.
