Public Transport

Originally the site of the acropolis of the ancient Illyrian city of Lissos in the 4th-3rd century BC, the castle has been rebuilt and modified throughout history by various powers, including the Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans.The castle's strategic importance is evident in its history. It was a key location during the League of Lezhë in 1444, where Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, united Albanian princes against the Ottoman Empire. The castle features a blend of architectural styles, with remnants of Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman structures visible throughout the site. Visitors can explore fortified walls, towers with lookout windows, a mosque, cisterns, and the remains of other buildings within the castle grounds.While the castle was damaged by an earthquake in 1729 and gradually abandoned, its ruins still stand as a testament to Albania's rich and turbulent past.
