History of Lezhë

Lezhë, known in antiquity as Lissus, was founded by the ancient Greeks in the 4th century BC. The city quickly became a significant trading hub due to its strategic location near the Adriatic Sea.
In 168 BC, Lezhë fell under Roman control after the defeat of the Illyrian king Gentius. The Romans recognized the city's strategic importance and developed it further as a military outpost and trading center.
During the medieval period, Lezhë became part of the Byzantine Empire and later fell under Venetian control in the 14th century. The Venetians fortified the city, turning it into a defensive stronghold against the Ottoman Empire.
In 1444, the Albanian national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg convened the League of Lezhë in the city. This alliance of Albanian noblemen was formed to resist Ottoman rule, and Lezhë served as a critical military and administrative center during this period.
Lezhë was eventually conquered by the Ottomans in 1478. Under Ottoman rule, the city experienced significant changes, including the construction of mosques and other Ottoman architectural influences. However, it also faced periods of hardship and decline.
With the decline of the Ottoman Empire, Lezhë played a role in the Albanian National Awakening. The city supported the movement for independence, which was finally achieved in 1912. Lezhë continued to develop as part of the new Albanian state.
