Elbasan Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Elbasanit, is a captivating historical site in the city of Elbasan, Albania. Originally built in the 4th century AD by the Romans and later restored and expanded by the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, the castle has been a strategic stronghold for centuries. Sultan Mehmet II ordered its restoration in 1466, transforming it into a military center during conflicts with Albanian national hero Skanderbeg. The castle's walls, initially constructed by the Romans, were reinforced by the Ottomans, featuring 26 equidistant towers that stand approximately 9 meters high. Within the castle walls, you'll discover a blend of historical and architectural styles, including Sinan Pasha's Turkish bath, an early 19th-century attraction.
