Rising from the heart of Tirana in Skanderbeg Square, Kulla e Sahatit (the Clock Tower) is more than just a timepiece; it's a symbol of the city's transformation through time. Constructed in 1822 by Et'hem Bey, who also completed the adjacent Et'hem Bey Mosque, the tower showcases Ottoman-era architecture. Originally, the clock mechanism was imported from Venice, with a bell from Germany, but in 1928, a German-made clock replaced it.Standing at 35 meters (115 feet), the tower was once the tallest structure in Tirana. Its unique octagonal shape and the clock faces on each of its four sides made it visible from all parts of the city. Visitors can ascend the 90-step spiral staircase to reach the viewing platform, rewarded with panoramic views of Skanderbeg Square, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, and the surrounding cityscape.Over the years, Kulla e Sahatit has undergone several changes and restorations, including after sustaining damage during World War II. Today, it stands as a testament to Tirana's resilience and a reminder of its layered history, blending Ottoman, Italian, and modern influences.
