The structure seen today largely dates from the 15th century. Strategically positioned 329 meters (1,079 ft) above sea level, Petrela Castle was an integral part of the signaling and defense network of Krujë Castle; fires were used to communicate between the castles. During Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottomans, the castle was commanded by Mamica Kastrioti, Skanderbeg's sister, adding to its historical significance. The castle has a triangular shape with two observation towers. Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy views of the Erzen valley, rolling hills, olive groves, and surrounding mountains.
