Rozafa Castle: A Sentinel of Shkodër

Rozafa Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Rozafës, stands as a powerful testament to Albania's rich history and cultural heritage. Rising from a rocky hilltop 130 meters above sea level, the castle commands a strategic position near the confluence of the Buna, Drin, and Kir rivers, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Shkodër and its surrounding landscapes.Founded by the Illyrians in antiquity, the castle has been rebuilt and modified by various civilizations, including the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. Each has left its mark on the castle's architecture and history. The visible walls today are primarily of Venetian construction. Within the castle walls, visitors can explore three courtyards, each containing ruins and remnants of past eras. Highlights include the ruins of the Church of St. Stephen, later transformed into the Mosque of Sultan Mehmet Fatih, and the Venetian governor's residence, which now houses a museum. The museum displays artifacts and exhibits detailing the castle's 4000-year history and the cultural heritage of the region.The castle's name is intertwined with the legend of Rozafa, a tale of sacrifice and devotion. According to the legend, the three brothers building the castle were unable to complete it because the walls collapsed each night. They sought the advice of a wise old man who told them they needed to sacrifice one of their wives by burying her alive in the walls. Rozafa, the wife of the youngest brother, accepted this fate on the condition that she be left with her right eye, hand, foot, and breast exposed so she could care for her infant son.
