Discover more about Rodoni Castle ruins

Rodoni Castle, or Kalaja e Rodonit, is a historic castle located on the Cape of Rodon, along the Albanian coast. Built in the 15th century by Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, the castle was strategically important for defense against the Ottoman Empire. Construction began after the first siege of Kruja, around 1450, and was completed around 1452. The castle walls stretched 400 meters, with towers at each corner. In 1466, during the Siege of Krujë, Skanderbeg used the castle as a retreat and a place to transport his family and others to Brindisi. It is believed that the castle was destroyed by Ottoman forces in 1467 but was rebuilt by the Republic of Venice in 1500. Over time, the Adriatic Sea's corrosive action has eroded parts of the castle, with some walls now submerged. Visitors can still see the outer walls and a tower. Today, Rodoni Castle offers visitors a unique blend of history and natural beauty. The castle's ruins provide a glimpse into Albania's medieval past, while its location on the Cape of Rodon offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. The surrounding area is ideal for nature walks, photography, and relaxation. Nearby, the ruins of Saint Peter's Church add to the historical significance of the site.
