Discover more about Kepi i Rodonit

Kepi i Rodonit, also known as Cape Rodon or Cape of Skanderbeg, is a rocky peninsula jutting into the Adriatic Sea, north of Durrës, Albania. This coastal gem is a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The cape is named after Rodon, an Illyrian god of the sea, similar to Poseidon in Greek mythology. Some even call it “The Land of the Giants,” linking it to the myth of Odysseus and the Cyclops. Rodoni Castle, also called Skanderbeg Castle, was built in 1463 by Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, as a strategic point and a quick exit to the sea. Though largely underwater today, its ruins offer an intriguing snorkeling experience. The Venetians rebuilt the castle after it was destroyed by the Ottomans in 1467. Not far from the castle stands the Church of St. Anthony, dating back to the 12th century and rebuilt in the 15th century. This Romanesque-Gothic church, part of a Franciscan monastery, features beautiful frescoes. For believers, every June 13th, a pilgrimage takes place, connecting this church with the Church of Laç and the city of Padova in a mysterious way. Kepi i Rodonit offers more than just historical exploration. The peninsula boasts untouched beaches, dramatic landscapes, and clear waters perfect for swimming. Hiking and biking trails provide panoramic views, while kayaking offers a unique perspective of the coastline. During the communist era, the cape was heavily fortified, and remnants of concrete bunkers can still be seen.
