Discover more about Apollonia Archaeological Park

Apollonia Archaeological Park, located near the village of Pojan in Albania, offers a captivating glimpse into the past. Founded in 588 BC by Greek colonists, Apollonia flourished as a major economic, political, and cultural center in ancient Illyria. The city's strategic location near the Adriatic coast and the fertile Myzeqe plain contributed to its prosperity. As you explore the sprawling archaeological site, you'll encounter remnants of various structures that reflect the city's rich history. Highlights include the Bouleuterion (town hall) with its iconic columns, the Odeon (theater), the Nymphaeum (a decorated fountain), and the Roman villa with its intricate mosaics. The Archaeological Museum, housed within the 13th-century Monastery of Saint Mary, displays a collection of artifacts unearthed from the site, providing further insights into the daily life and culture of Apollonia's inhabitants. The city's decline began in the 3rd century AD due to silting of its harbor and a devastating earthquake in the 4th century AD, which altered the course of the Vjosa River. Despite its abandonment, Apollonia's ruins have been preserved, offering visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and imagine life in this once-thriving ancient city. The Albanian government is currently seeking to inscribe Apollonia on UNESCO's World Heritage List, recognizing its outstanding universal value. Today, Apollonia is an expansive site where visitors can wander through the ruins and trees. The site includes a restaurant with spectacular views of the surrounding area.
