The Osumi Canyon (Kanioni i Osumit) is a majestic natural wonder in southern Albania, renowned for its dramatic landscapes and unique geological features. Carved over millennia by the Osumi River, the canyon stretches approximately 26 kilometers and reaches depths of up to 80 meters in some areas. The canyon is located in the Skrapar region, near the town of Çorovodë, about 1.5 hours away from Berat. The Osumi River has shaped the canyon's steep walls, creating a unique ecosystem where lush Mediterranean vegetation thrives year-round. The canyon walls are adorned with greenery, creating a striking contrast against the rugged rock formations. Some of the rock formations have been given fanciful names, such as the Cathedral, the Eye, and the Demon's Door. Visitors can experience the canyon through various activities, including rafting, hiking, and swimming. During the spring, melting snows fill the river, making it ideal for rafting and kayaking. In the summer, when the water level is lower, visitors can hike along the riverbed and swim in the pools. Several viewpoints along the canyon's edge offer stunning panoramic views. Popular viewpoints include the Blazënckë Bridge and the Bride's Hole. According to Albanian mythology, the Osumi River was formed by the tears of a woman named Osumi, who wept for two brothers, Tomorr and Shpirag, who died fighting over her. Today, the canyon is a popular destination for day trips from Berat, offering a blend of natural beauty and adventure.
