Discover more about Skanderbeg Square

Skanderbeg Square (Sheshi Skënderbej) is more than just a central plaza; it's the heart and soul of Tirana, Albania. Named after the national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, who led the resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, the square stands as a testament to Albania's rich history, resilience, and national identity. Originally established in 1917, the square has undergone several transformations, reflecting the country's complex and convulsive history. From its beginnings as a public square built by the Austrians to its redesign during the Italian occupation and subsequent modifications during the communist era, Skanderbeg Square has been a focal point for political rallies, demonstrations, and celebrations. The square is surrounded by some of Tirana's most prominent buildings, including the National History Museum, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower of Tirana, and the Palace of Culture. The Skanderbeg Monument, an equestrian statue of Skanderbeg, dominates the square and serves as an iconic symbol of Albania's independence and strength. Renovated in 2017, the square is now part of the biggest pedestrian zone in the Balkans, offering a modern and inviting space for locals and tourists alike. The redesign emphasizes pedestrian access, wide visibility, and cultural integration, making it a perfect place to stroll, relax, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. The square also features a unique stone pavement sourced from all over Albania, symbolizing national unity.
