Himara Castle: A Timeless Fortress with Ionian Views

Himara Castle, situated approximately 2.5 kilometers north of modern Himarë, stands as a testament to Albania's rich history. The castle's origins trace back 3,500 years to the Greek tribe of the Chaonians. Fortified from the 8th century BC, it was first mentioned by the Roman author Pliny in the 1st century AD. He wrote of a castle near the Ceraunian Mountains with a royal water fountain.Throughout the centuries, Himara Castle has been a strategic stronghold, witnessing battles and occupations by various powers, including the Byzantines and Ottomans. The castle became the center of the Bishopric of Himara in the 8th century. Inhabited until the 16th century, it was gradually abandoned as the population moved towards the coast.Today, Himara Castle offers visitors a glimpse into the past with its ancient stone pathways and weathered walls. Within the castle, discover the ruins of old houses and several churches, including the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus and the Church of St. Mary Kasopitra. The rocky hills on which the castle is built rise about 240 meters, providing stunning panoramic views of Livadhi Beach, the Ionian Sea, Corfu, and the surrounding canyons and mountains.
