Kalaja e Lëkurësit: Sentinel of Sarandë

Perched on a commanding hill, Kalaja e Lëkurësit offers visitors a unique blend of history and breathtaking scenery. Constructed in 1537 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire, the castle was strategically positioned to guard the harbor of Sarandë and the road to Butrint.Originally garrisoned with 220 soldiers, the castle played a vital role in defending against Venetian incursions. The castle's near-square shape features two round towers at opposite corners, with loopholes that provided strategic vantage points. The best-preserved sections are the southern and eastern sides, offering a glimpse into the castle's original structure.Over the centuries, Kalaja e Lëkurësit has witnessed various conflicts, including an attack by Ali Pasha of Ioannina in the late 18th century. The adjacent village of Lëkurës, once larger than Sarandë, was abandoned in 1878.
