Postbllok Memorial: A Reflection on Albania's Communist Past

Postbllok Memorial, located on Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard in Tirana, stands as a powerful reminder of Albania's difficult past under the People's Socialist Republic. Inaugurated on March 26, 2013, this memorial, created by writer Fatos Lubonja and artist Ardian Isufi, is dedicated to those who suffered during the oppressive communist regime.The memorial consists of three striking elements, each carrying profound symbolism :* A concrete military bunker, one of the many that once dotted the Albanian landscape, represents the country's long years under a dictatorial regime. * A section of the Berlin Wall, a gift from the city of Berlin, symbolizes Albania's isolation from the rest of the world during that era. * Concrete girders from Spaç Prison, where political prisoners, including Lubonja himself, were incarcerated, evoke the harsh realities of the prison system.The Postbllok Memorial is located in the neighborhood where communist officials built their homes; it is situated in what was once the garden of Mehmet Shehu, who was the Prime Minister of Albania from 1954 to 1981.
