Preza Castle: A Window to Albania's Past

Preza Castle, a medieval fortress in the village of Prezë, stands as a testament to Albania's rich and turbulent past. Located on a hilltop between the plains of Tirana and Durrës, the castle held strategic importance, particularly during the Middle Ages. It served as a vital signaling point, facilitating communication between the castles of Kruja, Petrela, and Durrës. Originally built in the 14th and 15th centuries by the Thopia family, a local Albanian feudal dynasty, Preza Castle later became a stronghold for Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire under the leadership of Skanderbeg between 1443 and 1468. Today, the castle is celebrated as a 'monument of culture'. Its well-preserved walls and towers, including a clock tower erected in the 1800s, offer visitors a unique glimpse into the past. The castle's pentagonal shape features four towers, one at each corner. Within its walls, a restaurant provides traditional Albanian cuisine and other services.
