Tanners' Bridge: A Journey Through Time

Tanners' Bridge, or Ura e Tabakëve, is a well-preserved vestige of Ottoman-era Tirana. Constructed in the 18th century, this stone footbridge served as a vital link along the St. George Road, connecting the city to the highlands of Debar. This route was essential for the commerce of livestock and agricultural goods into Tirana's bustling markets. Butchers and tanners, known as tabakë, plied their trade nearby, lending the bridge its name.The bridge is 8 meters long, 2.5 meters wide, and 3.5 meters high. Its elegant arches exemplify the craftsmanship of the era. The bridge's design consists of two arches, with the larger spanning 8 meters and reaching a height of 7.5 meters.In the 1930s, the Lanë stream, which once flowed beneath the bridge, was diverted, causing the bridge to fall into disrepair. However, in the 1990s, the bridge was restored, and it once again became a pedestrian crossing. Today, the Municipality of Tirana recognizes the Tanners' Bridge as one of the city's most important cultural monuments, a testament to Tirana's urban development in the 18th century.Located a short distance from the Murat Toptani Promenade and southeast of Skanderbeg Square, the Tanners' Bridge offers visitors a glimpse into Tirana's past.
