Nestled in the village of Mes, the Mesi Bridge (Ura e Mesit, meaning "the bridge in the middle") is a captivating stone bridge that showcases Ottoman engineering and architectural prowess. Constructed around 1770 by Kara Mahmud Bushati, an Ottoman pasha, the bridge stretches 108 meters across the Kir River. The bridge features 13 arches of varying sizes, giving it a unique and slightly irregular appearance. Built in two phases, the initial construction included the central arch and one adjacent arch, with the remaining eleven added later. This design reflects both the architectural style of the time and the practical considerations of bridging the river. The bridge is 3.4 meters wide and reaches a height of 12.5 meters, with the central arch spanning approximately 21.5 meters. Constructed using locally sourced stone, the bridge features round, smooth stones and stone plates, contributing to its structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.Strategically built to connect Shkodër with Drisht and other northern settlements, the Mesi Bridge facilitated trade and movement across the Kir Valley towards Pristina. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its historical significance and scenic surroundings. The Albanian Development Fund has invested in improving access to the bridge, allowing tourists to safely experience this cultural monument. Visitors can walk along the bridge, explore the riverbanks, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of this historical site. However, the bridge is at risk, having been damaged over time by devastating floods, which have resulted in floodwaters cutting away at the arches on the right side, causing cracking. The bridge holds the designation of a Cultural Monument of the First Category in Albania, protected for its historical, cultural, and architectural value.
