Getting there

Public Transport

To reach Petrela Castle via public transport from Tirana, take a bus from the Southeast Bus Station towards Elbasan. Ask the driver to drop you off in Petrelë. Buses typically depart every 30 minutes, and the journey takes approximately 35 minutes. From the center of Petrelë, it's about a 20-30 minute uphill walk (1 km) to the castle along Rruga Petreles. Bus fare is around 100-300 ALL.

Taxi

A taxi from Tirana to Petrela Castle offers a more direct and comfortable option. Taxis are readily available throughout Tirana. Negotiate the fare beforehand or ensure the meter is running. The drive takes approximately 20-30 minutes, and the cost is estimated to be between 1500-2500 ALL. The taxi can drop you off near the castle entrance on Rruga Petreles.

Driving

If driving from Tirana, head towards the Tirana-Elbasan highway (SH3). Take the exit towards Petrelë and follow the signs for Petrela Castle. Once in Petrelë, follow Rruga Petreles uphill to the castle. Parking is available near the entrance, and there may be a small fee depending on the time of your visit. Note that the road is narrow and winding in the final approach.

Walking

If you find yourself already in Petrelë, you can reach Petrela Castle on foot. From the center of Petrelë, head towards Rruga Petreles. The castle is located at the top of a hill and the walk is about 1 kilometer. It may take you around 20-30 minutes to reach the castle, but the views along the way are worth the effort.

Petrela Castle, located in the village of Petrelë, is a captivating historical site just a short drive from Tirana. The castle's origins trace back to the 6th century AD, during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, although the structure seen today largely dates from the 15th century. Strategically positioned 329 meters above sea level, Petrela Castle was an integral part of the signaling and defense network of Krujë Castle. Fires were used to communicate between the castles.During Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottomans, the castle was commanded by Mamica Kastrioti, Skanderbeg's sister, adding to its historical significance. The castle itself has a triangular shape, featuring two observation towers. Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy stunning views of the Erzen valley, rolling hills, olive groves, and surrounding mountains.A restaurant located within the castle offers traditional Albanian cuisine, providing a unique dining experience with a historical backdrop.
