Phoenice Archaeological Park, located near modern Finiq, Albania, unveils the history of an ancient Greek city that was once the heart of the Chaonian tribe. Founded in the 6th century BC, Phoenice rose to prominence as the wealthiest and most powerful city in the Epirus region, strategically positioned near the Straits of Corfu.Visitors can explore the extensive ruins, including the acropolis with its public buildings and the massive fortification walls, some sections dating back to the 4th century BC. The well-preserved theater stands as a testament to the city's cultural life, while remnants of temples, Roman houses, and a Byzantine basilica reveal layers of history. The park also bears traces of more recent history, with communist-era bunkers dotting the landscape, a reminder of Albania's Cold War past. The juxtaposition of these modern structures with the ancient ruins creates a unique and thought-provoking experience.Prepare for your visit by bringing water and sun protection, as there are limited facilities and shade on the hilltop site. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended to navigate the uneven terrain. Allow 1-2 hours to fully explore the park and soak in the panoramic views.
