Preza Castle, a medieval fortress in Albania, is a monument to the country's layered past. Located on a hilltop in the village of Prezë, the castle's origins trace back to the 3rd century BC, though most specialists believe it was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. The castle was constructed by the feudal Thopia family.Strategically positioned between the plains of Tirana and Durrës, Preza Castle played a vital role in regional defense. It served as a signaling point, facilitating communication between the castles of Kruja, Petrela, and Durrës. During the 15th century, it became a key stronghold in the Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire, led by Skanderbeg.The castle's pentagonal shape features intact walls, towers, and a clock tower erected in the 1800s. Visitors can explore the grounds, discover a large stele in the courtyard, and enjoy panoramic views of Tirana and the surrounding landscape. A restaurant inside the castle offers traditional food.Preza, known as the Phoenix City due to its repeated destruction and reconstruction, offers visitors a blend of history and natural beauty. The castle is located close to the Mother Teresa International Airport, making it easily accessible for travelers.
