The island is connected to the mainland by a 270-meter wooden bridge.The monastery's architecture showcases the Byzantine style, featuring a "free cross" plan and a central dome. The facade includes arches supported by six columns, blending Roman and Byzantine influences. Some scholars suggest origins as early as the 11th century. Throughout its history, the monastery served as a haven for monks seeking solitude and spiritual connection. The interior of the church is adorned with well-preserved frescoes that depict religious scenes and figures.During the communist era in Albania, religious institutions were suppressed, and the monastery was repurposed as a detention center for political prisoners. Restoration efforts began in 1972 to preserve the structural integrity of the church, with additional conservation work in 2001 to maintain its architectural and artistic elements.Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved monastery, admire its intricate frescoes and woodworking, and wander through the peaceful gardens.
