Tirana Castle: A Historical Heart in the City

Tirana Castle, or the Fortress of Justinian, stands as a testament to the long and varied history of Albania's capital city. Thought to have been constructed or reconstructed by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD, it is one of the oldest surviving examples of a city, marking the crossroads of ancient routes connecting Tirana with other Albanian cities.While much of the original structure has been lost to time, remnants of the Ottoman-era walls, standing six meters high, can still be seen. These walls were built by Ahmet Pashë Bargjini in the 18th century on the ruins of the old castle. In 1798, the Toptani family from Kruja took ownership, later restoring it into a tourist attraction. Today, Tirana Castle is more than just a historical site; it's a vibrant hub of activity. The walls have been incorporated into the pedestrianized Murat Toptani Street, offering a blend of cafes, souvenir shops, and the modern Toptani Shopping Center. Visitors can explore the traditional bazaar within the castle, which features handcraft stores and traditional cuisine, providing a unique cultural experience. The castle is undergoing continuous restoration, aiming to preserve its historical significance while integrating it into the city's modern life.
