    Discover more about Mirditë

Mirditë, often called the "Land of Cathedrals" or the "Albanian Vatican," is a mountainous region in northern Albania steeped in history and tradition. For centuries, Catholicism has shaped the identity of this area, evident in its numerous churches and religious sites. Mirditë offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage, making it an appealing destination for travelers seeking an authentic Albanian experience. The region's history is closely tied to the Mirditë tribe, who fiercely guarded their independence, even under Ottoman rule. This autonomy allowed them to preserve their Catholic faith and cultural customs. The most interesting historical phenomenon of Mirditë was the institution of the so-called captaincy (kapedania), which was based in Orosh. The Captain was the leader of the Mirditian tribes, the highest judicial authority, and also had the privilege of representing the region to foreign powers. After the First World War (1921), Captain Mark Gjoni declared the independent Republic of Mirditë, but the rebellion was suppressed by Albanian troops after less than half a year. Today, Mirditë is an emerging tourist destination, offering a range of attractions. Nature lovers can explore the Lura-Mali i Dejës National Park with its glacial lakes and rugged peaks. History buffs can visit the infamous Spaç Prison, a former communist labor camp, or the Rubik Church, an important Catholic structure with ancient roots. The region is also known for its stone towers, traditional architecture, and thriving wine production. Mirditë's largest town, Rrëshen, serves as a convenient base for exploring the surrounding areas.
