Amantia, an ancient city nestled in the hills near Vlorë, Albania, offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's rich Illyrian history. Founded in the 5th century BC, the city was strategically positioned, guarding a vital trade route and commanding views of the Vjosa River valley. Originally the main settlement of the Amantes, the city thrived economically, even minting its own coins by the 3rd century BC. The city's impressive defensive walls, stretching roughly 2100 meters, provided protection, while a large fort with two gates and defensive towers stood guard in the north. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, including the stadium, which could accommodate thousands of spectators. The stadium is considered one of the best-preserved ancient stadiums in Albania. The remains of a Doric-style temple dedicated to Aphrodite and an early Christian basilica can also be seen. Discoveries at the site include a relief of the God of Fertility, now displayed in the National Historic Museum. Although Amantia was eventually abandoned in the 6th century AD, it remains a significant archaeological site, offering a unique window into the lives of the Illyrian people and the influences of Greek and Roman civilizations.
